Cost Breakdown:
- Food (Hay, green leafy vegetables, minimal fruits and treats) – $10 per week.
- Vaccination and health check – $150 every 6 months.
Estimated annual cost: $10 x 52 weeks + $150 x 2 (twice a year) = $820
REMEMBER – THIS IS A BARE MINIMUM!
You will still need to consider…
- Neutering costs (not applicable for adopted rabbits as they will come desexed): ~ $200 – $500
- Rabbit boarding (if you are going on a holiday): ~ $25 – $30 per night
- Toys and entertainment such as tunnels and chew toys: ~ $5 – $200
- Additional vet consultations for minor health issues: ~ $80 – $100
- Emergency/After hours vet visits: ~ $600 – $1500 (e.g. when a rabbit stops eating or drinking for more than 12 hours, it is an emergency)
- Medium – high grade health issues: ~ $600 – $2000 (e.g. surgeries)
To minimise the chances of high vet bills, remember that ‘early bird catches the worm’. Take your rabbit to a rabbit-savvy vet as soon as you notice that they are unwell or stopped eating.
